2019  East Jordan Father of the Year  !!

Pictured from left Ernie Roberts (son), Gerald Roberts, Carol Timmer ( Rotary emcee and President elect ) and Gloria Roberts

Gerald "Jerry" Roberts, father of 6, grandfather of 15, and
great-grandfather of 12, was recognized as East Jordan's 2019 Father
of the Year by the East Jordan Rotary Club at the 99th Annual Father
Son Banquet held Saturday, April 20.  The award was presented by East
Jordan Rotary Club President-Elect, Carol Timmer.

Jerry's family describes him as a hard working man who was a leader at
the EJ Foundry for over 40 years.  He also did side jobs in his shop
to provide for his growing family, always striving for his children to
have more than he did growing up.  As a father, he took time to
sponsor a baseball team & take them all over the state to compete.  He
would help build floats for the Freedom Festival each year.  He taught
by example to work hard and put your family first.

After retirement, his wife's (Ernestine) MS progressed to the point
that she became wheelchair bound.  She also developed Cancer.  He took
care of her and all her health issues along with keeping the house.
He set aside his dreams of traveling the world to make this happen
without ever complaining.
He continued to care for her 24/7 at home until the day she passed.
He used his actions to show what love and devotion are to his wife,
his children, grand children, and great-grandchildren.

Congratulations to the 2019 East Jordan Father of the Year, Jerry Roberts

Rotary Donation to Grandvue Terrace and Recreation Park

Posted by Karen Brennan on Aug 19, 2016

The Rotary Club of East Jordan happily awarded a $5000 donation to the Grandvue Terrace and Recreation Park.  The mission of the park is to have an outdoor area that stimulates the senses, maximizes optimal healthy living, embraces fellowship and gives Elders a reason to get up in the morning and a purpose outside themselves.  The Grandvue Terrace and Recreation Park will provide opportunities for Elders to continue their love of nature with the creation of a one-acre outdoor area encompassing a greenhouse, walking paths with sitting areas, a woodworking/small animal barn, a tranquil water feature, a picnic pavilion and a multi-generational activity area with horseshoe pit and playground equipment.  The project will be funded entirely through donations, in-kind materials and services and grants.  Pictured from left to right; Dan Thomas, Karen Brennan, Tammy Jackson, Carol Timmer, Tami Vincent and Paul Michael

Rotary Youth Exchange

Posted by Karen Brennan
The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people regardless of nationality desire the same basic things: a safe, comfortable environment that allows for a rich and satisfying life for our children and ourselves. Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to meet people from other lands and to experience their cultures. This plants the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding. - See more at: http://www.ridistrict6290.org/

What is Rotary?

Rotary is Different Things to Different People:

  • To a ten year old boy it is his Little League Baseball team.
  • To community members and visitors it is a social gathering during East Jordan’s Sno Blast for the annual Chili Supper.
  • To a high school student it is the opportunity to become a foreign exchange student for a year and discover another culture.
  • To a ten year old boy it is his Little League Baseball team.
  • To graduating high school seniors, it’s the scholarship that helps them attend the college or university of their choice.
  • To a family in Central America it is the organization that provided them with a sand water filter that for the first time in their lives gave them potable water.
  • To Charlevoix/Emmet county students in a physically and mentally impaired program, it is the annual Christmas luncheon where the same jolly Santa knows them by name and brings them each a special gift chosen just for them.
  • To a local Boy Scout it is the opportunity to grow in body and mind with a positive set of core values.
  • To the millions of children worldwide it is knowing that they will never have to run the risk of contracting polio because they received a vaccine.
  • To a two mile stretch on M-66 it is knowing that twice a year a group will show up to clean-up the roadside.
  • To a local school it is a support system for their programs by providing opportunities that young people might not otherwise be afforded.
  • To a child in the Philippines living at the Lingap Center, it is a clean, safe home and an opportunity to attend school.
  •
  • To the organizations who present programs at our weekly meetings it is an opportunity to get their message out to a group of committed community citizens who are interested in learning about their mission, goals and objectives.
  • To the thousands of campers who stayed in a cabin at Camp Daggett it is a set of memories they will treasure forever.
  • To a dad and a son, it is an opportunity, once a year, to spend an evening together, with other dads and sons, at the annual Rotary Father-Son Banquet.
  • To our members, it is an opportunity to work and serve together, in support of the common good
